Rahilä Dawut's Story

Rahile Dawut is a professor at Xinjiang University in China and is internationally recognized as an expert in Uyghur folklore and traditions.She reportedly told a relative of her plans to travel from Urumqi to Beijing in December 2017. Since that time, her family and friends have lost contact with her and in August 2018 announced her disappearance. For more than three years, nothing had been known about Professor Dawut’s whereabouts or details of her well-being.On June 30, 2021, it finally was revealed that Professor Rahilä Dawut had been sentenced and imprisoned by the Chinese government.On September 21, 2023, it was confirmed by a source in the Chinese government that Professor Rahilä Dawut is sentenced to a life inprisonment for reportedly “endangering state security” and additionaly for deprivation of political rights for life. The Chinese authorities have yet provided any other information regarding Professor Dawut’s health, her ability to connect with family members, or her whereabouts.
